Parrot Adoption

Nov 22 2018

Thanksgiving at M.A.R.S. is for the birds, Parrots of course!

The butternut squash and pumpkin is in the oven roasting. All the parrots of our exotic bird rescue will be enjoying the delicious bounty either today or tomorrow depending on what the weather brings our way. Rain is predicted for today.

We only feed fresh foods when the birds are outside. Doing so inside would create a bug issue and we have learned through the years to not to allow that to happen.
Once again to all a Happy Thanksgiving from M.A.R.S.

Get out the flannel sheets, the wool jacket and gloves.

chilly weatherYep!!!! believe it or not this is for the inside of the house. Temperature reading outside is 35 degrees.

Now I certainly know for the rest of the country this can be considered pretty much mild temp wise, but here in the Sunshine State we haven’t experienced but one or two really cold nights up until now.

So what better way to heat up a cold house and warm up some amazing avians, and one chilled to the bone bird caretaker??

Of course french toast cooked very slowly on a gas stove.

All the outside birds were brought in last night even though they can easily take these temps as they have boxes to get in and ways to keep warm. But why not give them a change of scenery too. We had boarders and Birdy Boot Camp birds go home yesterday so cages were available to use for them. Now mind you this in itself causes a lot of ruckus among the rest of the crew.

Skipper and Daqueri who have been in and out of M.A.R.S. for years, are well known by many who frequent our rescue and sanctuary. They are, put simply, trouble makers. When they enter a room all he.. breaks loose. Fortunately after strategically placing a few blankets and comforters to block the view of them from some of the very agitated birds, all soon became quiet once again.

Again, all here at M.A.R.S.,thank all of you who read our blog and continue to keep up with all the goings on at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary. It is never very dull for very long, and we only wish there was more time to share more stories with you. Lately raising funds to keep going has been our focus. And that in itself is story waiting to be told.

More soon from M.A.R.S.. Please think of us – and consider a donation or become a M.A.R.S. member. We need your help to continue all we do to help all the avians. And do not forget to check out our Facebook page for more info and pictures.

RIP Angel Baby, you were such a girl.

In my own little corner located in the upstairs apartment I reside in here at M.A.R.S., I am looking out the window as the sun is rising.  I am temporarily blinded by the glow it exudes, while attempting to type a tribute to our Angel girl.  The sadness is overwhelming me.

I suppose you could say Angel is truly an Angel bird now. She had a life force and a glow all of her own and it made her such a special Cockatoo. Those that had the chance to know her would definitely agree with that. Others, and you know who you are, were just glad to keep her at arms distance, though still agreeing  she was a rather special female Umbrella.

Angel’s story is known by most who follow Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary our Florida parrot rescue M.A.R.S.. Her medical procedures were ongoing. Yet, in spite of  all her issues it was her desire to live her life so strong and with such joy that impressed us the most.  Sadly her strength finally gave out and she passed away peacefully in my arms.

Throughout all her medical procedures she gained additional time to find a happiness, borrowed time perhaps, but enjoyed so obviously by her every day she remained with us.

Angel will always be a part of our story here at M.A.R.S.. She definitely made her place among those Cockatoos whose names we will always remember with such joy and sadness.

All here at M.A.R.S., Angel above all would like to thank Dr. Jose Pepen at Aloha Animal Hospital for giving her every chance possible to be  here a bit longer with all of us.

Fly high, fly free, no fishing lure will hinder thee

Yes we are truly all about the birds here at Melbourne Avian Rescue Sanctuary, our Florida parrot rescue M.A.R.S.. Although sea birds are not usually on our adgenda, when one literally crosses your path, you must react and do what you can to help.

On the morning walk over the Melbourne causeway and back, upon our return, right in our path was a pelican looking rather a bit in distress. A long piece of fishing line was visible trailing behind him, as though forcing him to come to a standstill.

As you can guess we always look for discarded fishing items and dispose of them in the trash containers provided on the causeway. This appeared to be simply a case of untangling some fishing line and letting the pelican be on his merry way

I approached him very slowly, and very softly I spoke to him like I would to any parrot at M.A.R.S. who was showing signs of distress.  I grabbed the fishing line, and started edging closer to him all the while shortening the distence between us. I tugged and he tried to flap, his beak slashed at my face two or three times, and now I asked for help from another bridge walker. Hold his beak I said and tell him it’s ok, its ok.

Well as I raised the wing, I was astonished to find a fishing lure with what appeared to be six or more hooks imbedded into his body and his wing. So to work I went undoing each hook very gently, but as quickly as I could manage. Did I mention lice??? I was now covered on my upper body. Yuck!!

The fishing lore extracted, the pelican appeared fine and relieved as we all were. He headed back to the river free of his entanglement. I will post a pic of the lure on Face book/marsparrots with a hope that all read this story with a happy ending. One quick note to add. One of M.A.R.S. volunteers who I showed the lure to said that the line was cut on purpose, not broken by accident. Sad but true.
